Then, an internship at the Danish Embassy in Kampala is just what you are looking for. The Embassy of Denmark in Kampala is looking for three interns every semester running from 1st of February to 31st of July and 1st of August to 31st of January.
The three interns are all expected to participate in tasks across the Embassy’s portfolio. However, each intern will on a daily basis join one of the Embassy’s three teams. As an intern in one of the teams, you will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the team’s work, taking both your own qualifications and interest and the needs of the team into consideration :
Finance and Administration
The Finance and Administration team is in charge of the overall financial management of Denmark’s development assistance to Uganda and also manages the daily internal operations of the Embassy and the Embassy’s consular affairs. An internship in the team will give you an opportunity to work with a broad range of tasks within the team’s portfolio in close cooperation with your Embassy colleagues with your main focus being to take part in the administration, monitoring and controlling of the development portfolio. The Embassy is currently working on ensuring smooth and effective workflows and as an intern in the team, you will participate actively in this effort. We are looking for an intern with a genuine interest in economics, finance, accounting and organisational development.
The main tasks of the Politics team are managing the Embassy’s Good Governance Programme (called UGOGO), analysing and reporting to the MFA in Copenhagen on political developments in Uganda and the wider region, chairing the joint donor group on Democracy and Human Rights, EU coordination as well as multilateral organizations. The period for this internship will be very busy for the Politics team with Presidential and Parliamentary elections scheduled to take place in late February. The Politics team is also responsible for developing a new country policy paper – a task the intern will be heavily involved in. We’re looking for an intern with interest and competences in political analysis and good writing skills, who at the same time is ready to be flexible and take on all kinds of assignments.
The Economics team manages the Embassy’s engagements within the areas of economic growth and employment in Uganda. The team is in charge of the Embassy’s Growth Programme in Uganda (U-Growth II) and Water and Sanitation Programme (JWESSP), as well as Denmark’s support Infrastructure and Private Sector and Business Development. An internship in the Economics team will provide you with a unique insight to Danida’s work in a developing country with a growing economy. We are looking for an intern with a keen interest in development who is not afraid to work on a wide range of areas from Economic Growth and Recovery to Service Delivery in the Water Sector.
Typical tasks of the interns include:
Participation in dialogue and coordination with other development partners/donors
Programme monitoring and evaluation, including assessment of progress reports, reviews and audits as well as project visits/field visits
Participation in dialogue, contact and coordination with the programme teams at the Embassy and with Danida partners
Controlling the financial set-up in our Danida programmes
Various administrative tasks, such as drafting letters, responding to inquiries, prepare meetings and taking minutes from meetings
Involvement in the Embassy’s support to cultural activities
Tasks related to internal and external communication. This include updating, overseeing and maintaining the various communications platforms
The internship and tasks will be planned in further detail with your team supervisor according to your academic background, qualifications and areas of interest. Applicants will be evaluated on personal qualifications and interests as well as the needs of the different teams.

Transfer of credits (ECTS)
You are expected to have good interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently as well as working as part of a team. Keen interest in working in a developing country is a must. Being open-minded and having a high level of cultural awareness is essential. It is a requirement to have a high level of oral and written Danish and English and good computer skills (Word, Excel and Power Point) are an advantage.
Terms and conditions
Students applying for an intern position must have a bachelor degree and be enrolled in graduate studies. You must not already have a university degree at master level . To apply for the position you must be either a Danish citizen or have had an extensive attachment to Denmark for a longer period of time. The internships are unpaid, but the Embassy provides refund for documented expenses related to the internship (such as travelling, vaccinations, accommodation and insurance) for an amount up to DKK 3,500 a month. Alternatively, interns can receive DKK 3,500 a month to cover such expenses, but in that case it is generally not possible to receive SU simultaneously (see this rulingby Ankenævnet for SU). Duration of the internship is six months. The intern will be responsible for financing travel documents, visa, insurances and vaccinations. The three present interns in Kampala live in a furnished apartment which the new interns are expected to stay in. The apartment is about 10 minutes’ walk from the Embassy at the cost of app. DKK 5500 per month plus utilities (shared cost between the three interns).
